The House of Guerlain was founded in 1828 as a perfume store. In 1840 they opened their flagship store and put a mark on the Parisian fashion scene. In 1853 the success of Guerlain peaked with the creation of Eau de Cologne Impériale for French Emperor Napoleon III and his Spanish French wife Empress Eugénie. This perfume earned Pierre-François Guerlain the prestigious title of being His Majesty’s Official Perfumer. After this he created perfumes for Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and for Queen Isabella II from Spain.
In 1864 Pierre-François died and he left the house to his sons. They divided the roles between them: one master perfumer and the other one was managing and expanding the house. The master perfumer son, Aimé Guerlain, created many classic compositions including, Fleur d’Italie (1884), Rococo (1887) and Eau de Cologne du Coq (1894). But his masterpiece was the first fragrance that was not known as an eau de cologne, but as a parfum. For this fragrance, created in 1889, called Jicky, he not only used natural extracts but also synthetic ingredients.
Until 1994 the house of Guerlain was owned and managed by members of the Guerlain family. The last family master perfumer was Jean-Paul Guerlain. He created many Guerlain’s classic men’s fragrances. He retired in 2002 but stayed until 2010 an adviser for the House of Guerlain. Nowadays the House of Guerlain is owned by the LVMH group that specializes in luxury brands.
The creations of Guerlain have influenced for a long time the trends of perfumery with fragrances such as Jicky, Shalimar and Vétiver. Guerlain is one of the older houses that still exist solely to produce and market perfumes. Today, the house of Guerlain expanded and offers a large range of makeup and skincare products.
