During your stay stay in our central luxury hotel in Paris it is the perfect moment to visit Musée d’Orsay. This museum is located in an unusual place, at the former Orsay railway station, on the banks of the Seine. It was built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900 and is an artwork on itself. The collections the museum has to offer are from the period of 1848 to 1914 and shows the great diversity of artistic creation in the western world.

The transformation of the Orsay station into a museum was accomplished by the ACT architecture group. The project was chosen in 1979 out of six propositions and they respected Laloux’s architecture when transforming the station into its new function. The great hall is highlighted as the artery of the visit and they transformed the magnificent glass awning into the museum’s entrance. For the interior design they used a homogeneous stone that covers the floors and walls. The lightning is both artificial and natural and has a variety of intensity that is needed for the different works of art presented.

The collections are formed from three establishments, the Louvre museum for the work of artists born after 1820, the Musée du Jeu de Paume for Impressionistic art and the National Museum of Modern Art. Every artistic discipline that is represented in the Musée d’Orsay has its own history. There is a painting, sculpture, photographic, graphic arts, architecture and objets d’art collection. Besides the collections you can find temporary exhibitions, concert and shows. In the auditorium you can find a wide range of events, especially music and film. Also, there are symposia, talks and shows on a regular base for children. Enough reasons to bring a visit to Musée d’Orsay!

The Musée d’Orsay opening hours are everyday from 9.30 am to 6 pm, except for Mondays. On Thursdays the museum is opened until 9.45 pm. You can find on the location a bookshop and museum store. Also, there is a café and restaurant where you can take some rest before going on with your journey to discover the western world art. It is possible to join a guided tour in English that shows you the masterpieces of the Musée d’Orsay.
